Nutrition & Hydration

Course  Aims

The aim of this course is to give learners the knowledge and skills required to understand the nutrition and hydration needs of people in care and the importance of providing the correct quantities and types of hydrating foods to the individual.

This course is aimed at managers, heads of care and supervisors, as well as those responsible for preparing and serving food in a health and social care environment.  It will help care workers understand the importance of a balanced diet and maintaining a good level of hydration for the individuals they support.

Learners are to undertake written assessment.

Course  Content

On successful completion of the training candidates will understand:

  • The standards of nutrition required for those in care homes.
  • The importance of healthy eating and a healthy diet.
  • Fluid, nutrients, energy and food groups.
  • Special diets for those with obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, raised cholesterol levels.
  • The importance of nutrition and malnutrition.
  • Understand diets for different cultural groups.
  • Be aware of food intolerances and allergies.
  • Health problems related to a poor diet.
  • The MUST tool.
